PPA S.A.: Meeting between Mr. Panagiotis Tsonis, Deputy CEO of PPA S.A. and Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism

In the context of the annual conference of ESPO (EUROPEAN SEA PORTS ORGANIZATION), which took place in Thessaloniki following the General Assembly held on 7th, 8th, and 9th of May 2025, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of PPA S.A., Mr. Panagiotis Tsonis, met with the European Union Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas. During the meeting, common issues and challenges faced by ports on a European scale were discussed. The conversation focused on current energy and geopolitical challenges, the need to address climate change, as well as the role of the Port of Piraeus—as the country’s largest port—in promoting international trade and contributing to the growth of tourism and the cruise industry in Europe.
Sustainable development, security and the strengthening of cooperation remain high on the agenda, with the aim of upgrading Greece and the wider region. The objective is to establish a unified strategy which also takes into consideration the specific characteristics and individual needs of each port, within the framework of the joint effort to reinforce impact at both European and international level.
Mr. Panagiotis Tsonis, Deputy CEO of PPA S.A., emphasized the remarkable upward trend recorded in the cruise sector, as well as the growth to all areas of port activities, boosting the Port of Piraeus’ standing as a strategic hub for maritime and commercial activity in the region. These initiatives and developments have also provided significant benefits to the job market of the country, while further advancing the port’s contribution to national economic growth.
