The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and Witherby Publishing Group have released a new edition of ‘Maritime Security: A Comprehensive Guide for Shipowners, Seafarers and Administrations’.
The Guide addresses the shifting threats faced by the shipping industry today, including political instability, piracy, terrorism and cyber attacks. It equips readers with the knowledge and tools to confidently navigate the complex landscape of maritime security.
This second edition provides a comprehensive overview that complies with SOLAS and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code statutory requirements, which offer guidance on managing and mitigating security threats. References to both these trusted and new security resources are compiled into one book, including the latest Best Management Practices for Maritime Security (BMP), Maritime Industry Security Threat Overview (MISTO) and more.
Maritime security has become an increasingly critical concern for the global shipping industry, driven by the evolution of existing threats and the emergence of new ones, including piracy, terrorism and cyber attacks. The industry has responded by strengthening its security measures, establishing a robust security culture supported by best practice guidance and a dedicated statutory framework under SOLAS. This publication, produced by ICS and Witherbys, is an invaluable tool for Masters, company security officers, ship security officers, port facility security officers and administrations, while also serving as a useful entry point for anyone interested in maintaining global trade security.
The International Chamber of Shipping’s Principal Director – Marine, John Stawpert said:
“Events since 2021 have increased the threat to shipping with warlike activity in the northern Black Sea and the southern Red Sea adding to the security risks ships may face. Awareness and preparation are crucial in mitigating such threats, and the comprehensive guidance in the updated ICS Maritime Security Guide will be a cornerstone for companies, masters and seafarers in assessing threats and securing their vessels against them wherever they may be encountered”.
This Guide serves as an overarching publication on all maritime security issues and complements the more detailed ICS and Witherbys titles that cover particular security aspects, including the latest ‘Drug Trafficking and Drug Abuse On Board’, ‘Cyber Security Workbook for On Board Ship Use’, ‘Piracy, Armed Robbery and Conflict at Sea’ and ‘Shipboard Response to Stowaways and Distressed People in Small Boats’ publications.
