MARAD issues Advisory re High Risk Waters of the Gulf of Guinea

The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) has issued an advisory providing guidance to vessels transiting and operating in waters of the Gulf of Guinea. Armed groups continue to hijack tankers laden with refined petroleum products and to steal items of value from crew, passengers, and the vessels. Frequently, they take some persons on board as hostage. Vessels in these waters should exercise extreme caution and report all incidents. Advisory 2013-05
