South Africa: Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice

SAMSA logo

The South African Maritime Safety Authority has issued guidance about which regulations are in force governing the safe handling of cargo at the country's ports. Recently, there has been some confusion as to whether it is the South African Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice, or the Code of Safe Working Practice for Ships Handling Cargo in South African Ports that is in effect. In its Marine Notice No.11 of 2013, the Maritime Safety Authority states that the Amended Maritime Occupational Safety Regulations 2007, which seeks to replace the South African Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice with the Code of Safe Working Practice for Ships Handling Cargo in South African Ports, has not yet been promulgated by the Department of Transport. Therefore, the South African Cargo Handling Code of Practice is still in effect and must be complied with.
