THE WORLD FLEET
According to Lloyd's Register-Fairplay data, as of March 22nd, 2013, the world fleet of self-propelled, sea-going merchant ships, greater than 1,000 gross tons (GT), stood at 50,450 ships of 1,239,068,857 gross tons, including 4,631 ships, of 229,309,148 gross tons, on order.
THE GREEK CONTROLLED FLEET
According to the same data, as of March 21st, 2013, Greek interests controlled 3,677 vessels of various categories, of 264,054,167 total DWT and 155,904,976 total GT. Compared with the previous year's data, this represents a decrease of 86 vessels, but an increase of 1,282,353 DWT and 83,408,057 GT. Total DWT is the highest ever. The figures include 282 vessels, of various categories, of 18,394,358 GT, on order from shipyards. (Last year 437 vessels, of 25,471,448 GT, were on order for Greek account).
The fleet registered under the Greek flag has also declined, now comprising of 829 ships, of 73,449,021 DWT and 43,316,618 GT, as against 862 ships of 74,504,230 DWT and 43,632,701 GT in 2012. This is due in part to problems arising from the organisational structure of the flag administration, which are now being addressed. It is also welcome that the decrease is not as big as last year, which may be a result of existing ships returning, or new ships being entered to the national register, which continues to be the first choice. The figures for 2013 include 64 on order, of 5,343,260 GT and 7,482,046 DWT.
It is welcome news that with the exception of "Pure Cargo" and "Other Cargo" ship types, the percentage shares of all the other types of Greek controlled vessels, relative to their respective shares of the world fleet have increased or remained constant for the year 2012.
As a percentage of the world fleet, the Greek controlled fleet has continued its slow but steady decline, now representing around 7.3% of the world's total number of vessels in service and on order, 14.7% of the world's fleet deadweight, or 12.6% of the world's fleet expressed in gross tons (as against 7.7%, 14.4% and 12.5% respectively, last year). In terms of ships on order, the percentages are 6.1%, 11.6% and 11.5%, respectively. Notwithstanding the above, Greek interests control an impressive 23.2% of oil tankers and 15.1% of ore and bulk carriers.
